The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was founded by Alvin Ailey in 1958. Ailey assembled 11 dancers to perform his work "Blues Suite" at New York's 92nd Street YMCA.

Annie opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre on April 21, 1977 starring Andrea McArdle, Reid Shelton and Dorothy London.

Riverdance, the original seven minute dance number, was first performed as part of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Dublin, Ireland in April 1994. The energy from the piece extended into a standing ovation from an audience of 3,000.
