City Spotlights

The entire City of Boston is invited to attend these free cultural performances celebrating Boston's neighborhoods by presenting some of their best performing arts groups. City Spotlights connects communities through the performing arts and gives much-deserved recognition to local performing arts groups and individual neighborhood performers. The evening features performances by High School Interns, Neighborhood Ensembles and Special Guest Artists from our featured City Spotlights neighborhoods. Teachers are encouraged to bring their classes to this event in celebration of Boston's communities. Performance guides are available.

City Spotlights High School Internships

City Spotlights High School Internship Program is an excellent opportunity for energetic and creative students aged 14-19 with an interest in the performing arts and working with the community, theater companies, professional teaching artists, students, teachers and families. This program offers a variety of responsibilities and learning experiences, including: joining an ensemble of peers led by a performing arts professional to create an original performance piece; contributing to the creation and implementation of community workshops and performances; communicating with teaching artists, workshop participants, and theater company managers; increasing knowledge of professional job readiness skills and resources; and working cooperatively and collaboratively with members of Citi Performing Arts Center's education staff on large-scale projects and administrative tasks.

This internship includes acting training, cultivating an ensemble, teaching workshops and participating in classes focused on professional development and job readiness skills. In the spring, interns join a Neighborhood Ensemble to further examine personal stories and the stories of residents from a City Spotlights featured neighborhood and perform with the Ensemble on stage as part of City Spotlights. Participants will also lead Interactive Performance Workshops in and around Boston neighborhoods. Both fall and spring session participants receive a small stipend for their work in this program.

There is an interview and application process for this program. Please call (617) 532-1256 for more information or to schedule an interview. Audition requirements include a 2-3 minute memorized monologue from a published play. Please also bring along a headshot or picture of yourself and a resume if you have one.

Celebrate Musical Theatre: Sing Out Loud Summer High School Internships

In this multi-session summer musical theatre intensive, participants aged 14-19 explore performance skills, voice training and projection, dance for theatre and develop their leadership and mentorship skills. Focusing on current and classic pieces from the musical theatre canon, participants create an original performance piece, become familiar with musicals and their universal themes and share their knowledge with the community through teaching internships and leading Interactive Performance Workshops. Work is focused on expanding vocal range, fundamental music skills, and song interpretation using different acting techniques.

Participants receive a small stipend for their work in this program. The program will culminate in a final showcase performance.

City Spotlights All *Star Institute Internships*

(Ages 14 – 19; prerequisite: successful completion of at least one Citi Center High School Intermission)

Three Week Long Intensives

Week One: Aspects of Theatre
This intensive will provide training for all aspects of theatre and what it takes to produce and implement a night at the theatre: front of house operations, backstage management, lighting and sound design and stage management. Interns will devise their plans toward creating a repertory company of their own. This week will culminate in a Fun Friday workshop including a presentation from All *Stars.

Week Two: Playwriting
The play’s the thing and we need you to write it. Have you ever considered staging an idea? What would you write about? What concerns you? What are you excited about sharing? This intensive will focus on writing skills for the stage. Explore your ideas and create your first ten minute play. This week will culminate in a Fun Friday hosted by the interns that includes the staging of their writing.

Week Three: Acting for the Stage
This intensive will focus on skills building for the stage including voice and articulation, movement, building a character, memorizing lines and blocking while working on scripted scenes. Participants will present their scenes at the end of this week during the Fun Friday workshop.

*Please note this internship is open to previous High School Interns who have completed our programs in the past.
All *Star interns are also required to attend Master Classes, lead theatre tours and assist the Education Department with special events as needed.
