Most have no formal arts training and little to no arts in their schools. Teen Leaders will spend the first 5 weeks (July 8th- August 2nd) developing leadership and job development skills while also getting intensive dance, theatre and music classes in The Wang Theatre. They create original performance pieces in all three performing arts areas based around a self-chosen social topic that impacts their communities.
The Music Director conducts sessions with a small group of 10 teens three times a week for 90 minutes who chose to specialize in music, plus another 90 minute block with the full group of 30 teens. There is also a weekly 2-hour group check-in with the dance and acting Teaching Artists on Friday mornings. In the 6th week of the program (August 5th- August 9th), there are no formal sessions. In addition, the Teen Leaders conduct interactive performance workshops with children in community centers throughout the city.
Our Teen Leaders are committed to social change and community development. Many have extraordinary challenges to overcome daily, but more importantly, they do not see themselves as victims – they see themselves as agents of change in their communities and in their worlds. In the 7th week of the program, Teaching Artists return to rehearse the final performance that takes place in the lobby of The Wang Theatre on August 22nd.
